Crowns

Crowns are a form of dental restoration that may be used for a number of different reasons. Also known as “tooth caps” or “dental caps,” crowns completely cover the tooth above the gum line. It is normally done to restore the shape of and/or strengthen the tooth, or to cover a dental implant. It may also be used for cosmetic reasons. For example, if a tooth is badly chipped or broken, a crown designed specifically for your mouth and your tooth will give the tooth the appearance of being whole. A dental cap may also be used to cover a discolored tooth, provided that is determined to be the best option. Crowns can return confidence to your smile!

Crowns must be created and molded uniquely for each person and each tooth. Having one made normally requires molds of your teeth and jaw to be sent to a laboratory where they manufacture your unique crown which they then ship back to your dentist. NY Dental Group has its own laboratory right in the dentist office, which dramatically cuts down on the time this process takes for our patients.

A crown can be made from several materials: metal, porcelain, ceramic, resin or a combination of these. Our dentists will discuss these options with you in order to help you decide which type is best for you based on factors that include longevity, cost and appearance.

Good oral hygiene is still necessary with a crown. Given proper care, your cap should last anywhere from 5 to 15 years. You may notice some sensitivity to heat or cold due to receiving the new crown. If you have any trouble with your crown, such as chipping, becoming loose or falling off, call us immediately.

Bridges

Dental bridges may be used when a person is missing one or more teeth. They are used to “bridge” the gap and replace the missing teeth in order to prevent problems that may arise from having a gap.

There are two main types of bridges – fixed or removable. Fixed bridges are bonded or cemented into place between a crowned tooth on either side of the gap, with no need to remove from your mouth for cleaning. Among fixed bridges there are also different types. They can be made of gold, porcelain fused to metal or all porcelain. We will help you to determine if a fixed bridge is the right option for you and what type.

Removable bridges (or partial dentures) are usually less expensive than fixed bridges, but may not feel as secure as a fixed bridge. They are also usually less expensive for repairs. Different types of removable bridges are available. One type is held in place with metal clasps that wrap around the existing teeth. It is possible for the metal to be seen when talking or smiling. Another type of partial denture requires special crowns to be placed on the teeth on both sides of the gap. These crowns have an attachment that lets you slide the bridge into place, eliminating the need for metal clasps. We will help you to determine if the removable bridge is the best choice for you.

As always, good oral hygiene is still necessary, even with false and crowned teeth. For a potential alternative to a bridge, click here to learn about tooth implants.
