Most people are familiar with silver fillings (also known as dental amalgam fillings) which have been used for over 150 years. Less known is the newer white fillings (also referred to as tooth bonding) which have been around for over 30 years, and is becoming more and more popular. Because tooth bonding is white, it presents a more natural look than the silver amalgam filling. Being more cosmetically appealing, a white filling is typically a patient’s first choice when a filling is required, but it is not always the right or best choice.

The benefits of white fillings include:

  1. Similar in color to your teeth.
  2. Requires a smaller portion of your tooth structure to be removed before filling than is required for amalgam fillings.
  3. Able to withstand chewing due to its durability and resistance to fracturing (its bonding to the tooth helps to strengthen both the filling and the tooth).
  4. Good alternative for people with allergies to metals.
  5. Contains no mercury.

Possible drawbacks of white fillings include:

  1. Larger cavities may be too big to be properly bonded by the white filling.
  2. Requires more time, greater expertise and more expensive materials, so the cost is naturally greater. (NOTE: Due to the additional expertise required for this procedure, it is very important to have it done by a dentist who has the extra training and experience needed. This procedure is not taught in dental school, and many problems can be caused by dentists who are uncomfortable doing this procedure, but attempt it anyway. We are pleased to let you know that our dentists do have the training and experience to confidently provide this service.)
  3. Many insurance carriers do not yet cover tooth bonding.
  4. Not recommended for patients who grind their teeth.
  5. Can be seriously weakened by excessive alcohol consumption.

As you can see, white fillings are not for everyone or for every situation. We will be happy to discuss your options with you in order to provide the right solution for your individual needs.
